IT&E Peer Advisor's Role
The IT&E Peer Advisor provides student support services to freshmen and other undergraduate students, as assigned by the IT&E Student Services Office. Generally, the Peer Advisor works from 6-10 hours per week, holding office hours in 208 Sci/Tech II and attending targeted classes. Ongoing training is provided for the Peer Advisor, and Peer Advisors are expected to provide timely/weekly reports on their activities (e.g., meeting with assigned students and other activities related to retention and recruitment). Additionally, the Peer Advisor is expected to stay in touch with assigned students, as well as contact other students who have demonstrated that they might benefit from some special “outreach” efforts (e.g., students experiencing academic difficulties, or personal/social related problems).
Checklist for Peer Advisor Activities
- Establish a "Peer" relationship, and be a positive role model
- Serve as a sounding board for students, and refer students to proper resources as definied by IT&E Student Services Office.
- Be an excellent resource for students by becoming well-versed on Mason’s policies, procedures, and practices, and inform students of important events/deadlines. [List will be provided by IT&E Student Services Office.]
- Provide academic support (e.g., conduct "help" sessions, arrange study group sessions) for students seeking help.
- Be a valuable resource to Instructor (e.g., distribute/collect handouts, assist with grading of assignments, and alert Instructor to any problems).
- When assigned to groups (or to individual students), coordinate group activities, contact group members frequently, and keep log of student contacts.
- Assist with special IT&E events (e.g., Open House, Spirit Week, mailings).
