Brief description: DoD has been one of the most active Federal Departments in moving to
Service Oriented Architectures (SOA). This workshop sponsored by George
Mason University, AFCEA and IBM - Federal SOA Institute, will focus on
the application of the SOA concept to the DoD environment.

Hunting for New Exploits with Honeyclients
Tuesday, January 22, 2008
11:00 - 12:00
Research I, Room 401
Speaker:
Kathy Wang -
The MITRE Corporation
Abstract:
Attacks against client-side applications has increased
significantly over the last year. Numerous research results have shown
that these attacks are only going to increase. We need to continue to
become more proactive in detecting these types of attacks so that we
can respond to them quickly and protect our critical infrastructure.
A honeyclient is instrumented to detect malicious servers. This
presentation will show you how to install, configure, and pilot the
open-source HoneyClient package and start finding zero-day client-side
exploits in time to defend against them.
You'll also learn about the latest in honeyclient
technology. Attackers have become aware of honeyclients and are taking
steps to avoid detection. Hear the latest on the arms race as we beef
up honeyclients to counter the latest moves by attackers.
Bio:
Kathy Wang is the lead researcher of The Honeyclient Project at The
MITRE Corporation. The Honeyclient Project aims to create methods to
detect and respond proactively against new client-side application
exploits. Past projects of Kathy's include Morph, an OS fingerprint
cloaking tool. Prior to working at MITRE, Kathy worked at Counterpane,
the University of Michigan's Computer-Aided Engineering Network
(CAEN), and DEC. Kathy graduated with a BS and MS in electrical
engineering from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She has
presented her past works at numerous conferences internationally,
including GFIRST, RSA Conference, DEFCON, AusCERT, ToorCon, and ReCon.
