Scholarships

Scholarships are available through the Office of Admissions, the Office of Student Financial Aid, and The Volgenau School of Information Technology and Engineering (IT&E).

IT&E Scholarships

Freshmen and transfer students are identified for these scholarships by IT&E from applications for admission. Students who consider themselves to be distinguished in criteria besides grade point average and scores on standardized exams are encouraged to apply directly to the IT&E Student Services Office.

Accenture Scholarship ($1,000-$2,000)

Applicants must be college juniors, seniors, or graduate students who plan to attend George Mason University in The Volgenau School of IT&E, the School of Management, or the College of Arts and Sciences. Applicants must have a strong interest in pursuing a career in business consulting, as demonstrated by courses they have taken. Applicants must show superior academic achievement and participate in extracurricular activities and/or community service.

Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Scholarship ($2,000)

Scholarships are offered through the Volgenau School of IT&E to assist current undergraduate students studying in the field of computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, systems engineering, information technology, or a related field. Applicants must show evidence of scholastic achievement and capability, and must be U.S. citizens. Contact the IT&E Student Services office to apply.

Association of Old Crows Scholarship ($1,000-$2,000)

The Capitol Club Association of Old Crows Scholarship offers this scholarship to a student majoring in electronics or electrical engineering or a related field. The award is based on high levels of academic excellence and personal standards and financial need. Preference is given to students with military background or experience. Apply to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in April and May via the department’s undergraduate scholarship application forms.

Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Institute Scholarships ($500 to $5,000)

Several levels of scholarships are available to students majoring in civil and infrastructure engineering. Scholarly engineering potential, including scholastic accomplishment, work experience, community service, and other factors that represent candidates as well-rounded students, is the criterion. Personal statement from applicants on why they are majoring in civil and infrastructure engineering, and how the scholarship will assist in that goal, is required. Financial need will be considered, but is not the major factor. These scholarships are renewable, provided the recipients maintain full-time status in the major and make satisfactory progress toward the degree. An important factor is participation in the Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering Department’s (paid) summer internship program.

A special scholarship is for a Fairfax High School senior who wants to work toward a degree in civil and infrastructure engineering in The Volgenau School of IT&E. Advanced Placement courses in physics and mathematics are a plus, as the civil and infrastructure engineering degree program is academically challenging. Applicants for any of these scholarships are recommended by their high school guidance counselors, are identified from applicants to George Mason University for the civil and infrastructure engineering program, or identify themselves through e-mails and personal letters.

Fay Dubin Scholarship ($500 to $1,000)

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman planning to major in business, science, engineering, or technology. Applicants must plan to enroll full-time and qualify for Virginia in-state tuition.

Employment Enterprises, Inc. Scholarship ($500)

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman planning to major in business, science, engineering, or technology. Applicants must have a high school GPA of at least 3.30, must qualify for Virginia in-state tuition, and plan to enroll full-time.

Dorothy S. and Hugh McDiarmid Scholarship ($5,000)

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who plans to attend George Mason full-ime while majoring in business, science, engineering, or technology. Applicants must also have a minimum high school GPA of 3.3, and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 while attending George Mason University to be eligible for scholarship renewal.

Northern Virginia Technology Council Foundation (NVTC)/Daniel R. Bannister Scholarship ($1,000 to $2,500)

This scholarship honors Daniel Bannister, former NVTC chairman and founding chairman of the NVTC Foundation, and a former member of the Board of Trustees of the George Mason University Foundation.

Applicants must be full-time juniors or seniors at George Mason University, enrolled in a major in IT&E. They also must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and qualify on the basis of need and merit. Preference is given to Northern Virginia residents. The scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient continues to meet these criteria.

Patton Harris Rust &Associates Endowed Scholarship (at least $1,000)

This scholarship honors the memory of Wesley G. Harris, Jr., president of PHR&A. Applicants must be residents of Virginia, Washington, D.C., or Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Frederick, Anne Arundel, or Howard County in Maryland. They must have at least a 2.5 high school GPA and be enrolled in the civil and infrastructure engineering degree program in IT&E. Other criteria include activities, honors, SAT/ACT scores, financial need (although not necessarily based on federal requirements), and an essay. Nortel PEC Solutions, Inc., Scholarship ($1,000)

Nortel PEC Solutions provides a scholarship to undergraduates enrolled in an information technology or engineering major in IT&E. In addition to these criteria, applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and U.S. citizenship.

Rockwell International Engineering Scholarship ($1,000-$2,000)

This scholarship, in memory of Robert L. Severns, is based on demonstrated promise of succeeding in the engineering field, academic excellence and financial need. Apply to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in April and May via the department’s undergraduate scholarship application forms.

Graduate Student Aid Offered through IT&E

President’s Graduate Scholarship

There is one such scholarship each year for an entering, full-time PhD student in each of the three PhD programs in IT&E. Effective fall 2006, it covers tuition for nine credits per semester, and a stipend of $18,000 a year. Application criteria are a GPA of at least 3.5 from the most recent degree, and combined GRE scores of 1200. The scholarship is available for three years, provided the recipient maintains at least a 3.5 GPA at the end of his/her first and second years and is making continuous progress toward the dissertation.

Students should contact the director of the appropriate PhD program to apply as soon as they apply to the PhD program.

IT&E Graduate Fellowship ($3,000 PhD students, $1,500 MS students)

Full-time and part-time master’s or Ph.D. students are eligible. Both merit and need are considered. This fellowship could be in addition to graduate research assistantships or teaching assistantships. Preference is given to doctoral students in their first year of study. Deadlines

IT&E Graduate Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships

Carl M. Harris Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by family, friends, colleagues, and former students of Carl M.Harris. Dr. Harris was BDM International Professor of Information Technology, associate dean for research and graduate studies, and chair of the departments of Systems Engineering, Operations Research and Applied Statistics, and Operations Research and Engineering in IT&E.

Applicants must be full-time graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in operations research in IT&E. Students qualify on the basis of academic merit and financial need. The scholarship is renewable, provided the recipient continues to meet these criteria. Contact the Systems Engineering and Operations Research Department to apply.

IMC Suneeth Nayak Scholarship

This scholarship, endowed by IMC, Inc., its employees, and executives, is in memory of Suneeth Sanjeeva Nayak. Mr. Nayak received an MS in computer science and the Outstanding Alumnus Award for Technical Management from IT&E.

Applicants must be graduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.2, seeking a degree in information technology, engineering, or computer science. The scholarship is renewable, provided the recipient maintains a GPA of at least 3.2 while continuing to work toward a graduate degree in IT&E. Contact the appropriate department to apply.

James D. Palmer Scholarship (at least $2,000)

This scholarship was created by alumni and faculty to honor Dr. Palmer, who joined the School of Information Technology and Engineering in 1985 as the first BDM International Professor of Information Technology and as associate dean for graduate studies.

Students who are enrolled in a graduate degree program IT&E, either full time or part time, may apply for this scholarship on the basis of merit. The scholarship is renewable if the recipient maintains a GPA of at least 3.0 while continuing to work toward a graduate degree in IT&E. Contact the appropriate department to apply.

AFCEA NOVA Scholarship (up to $4,000)

These scholarships assist undergraduate and graduate students studying in technical fields such as information technology, engineering, natural and physical sciences, mathematics, and other technology-related fields supportive of national security. American Society of Naval Engineers Scholarship ($2,500-$3,500)

Candidates will be in either the last year of a full-time undergraduate program or first year of a graduate program leading to a designated engineering or physical science degree. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, and graduate student candidates must be members of American Society of Naval Engineers or Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Datatel Scholars Foundation/Nancy Goodhue Lynch Scholarship ($2,500)

Nancy Goodhue Lynch scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students majoring in information technology-related programs. Applications are at www.datatel.com/dsf. Deadline to apply is January 31, 2006.

Datatel Scholars Foundation Returning Student Scholarship ($1,500)

These scholarships provide assistance to current outstanding students who have returned to higher education after an absence of five years or more. Students may be undergraduates or graduates. Applications are at www.datatel.com/dsf. Deadline to apply is January 31, 2006.

UNCF/Marathon Oil Corporation Corporate Scholars Program Internship/Scholarship (up to $10,000)

Applicants must be majoring in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, physics, or health, environment and safety. Applicants must be second-semester sophomores or second-semester seniors or graduate students. U.S. citizenship and a 3.0 GPA are also required. Applications can be obtained at www.uncf.org. Deadline to apply is January 13, 2006.
